Amazon has confirmed that Kindle reader owners will soon have the facility to lend Kindle books to other Kindle users. The exact date is, as yet, unconfirmed - but it will be sometime this year.
It’s a very positive move which will help both e-book readers and e-books to become even more widely accepted. The public seems to have adopted e-books very rapidly. Kindle books are now outselling traditional hardcovers by a factor of 180 to 100, according to Amazon. Surely it can be no more than a matter of time before e-book sales overtake paperback sales.

The world of book publishing is about to enter a period of massive change - and it’s all due to the relatively recent growth in the popularity of both e-book readers and e-books. As a result of the increased popularity of e-book readers – such as the Amazon Kindle for example – e-books have rapidly become accepted by the general public. It would be very easy to consider them as no more than another way of delivering written content. However, they may prove to be the most significant change to reading since Gutenberg invented the printing press.

It’s now been three years since Amazon released their first Kindle reader. Despite the huge influence of the Kindle, it’s worth recalling that it wasn’t the first ebook reader to be launched. However, ebooks are now becoming very well established - largely due to the influence of the Kindle. It’s debatable whether or not ebooks will replace “real” books in future - but they certainly appear to be here to stay.

The Amazon Kindle reader has been a huge success for Amazon since it was first launched in November of 2007. The updated Kindle 2.0, which launched in February 2009 was a driving force in the early development and growth of the e-book reader market and the latest third generation Kindle reader, launched at the tail end of July 2010, has been flying off the shelves.
According to Amazon, the new Kindle 3 has been selling faster than any previous Kindle did during the equivalent post launch period. It’s a long way removed from the widely forecast demise of the Kindle that a lot of industry analysts anticipated in the wake of the Apple iPad’s launch.

The Association of American Publishers recently announced that e-book sales for the first six months of 2010 were 183% up on the equivalent period in 2009. Forrester Research estimated that 11 million Americans would own a digital reading device by the end of September 2010.
It looks like e-book readers are actively encouraging people to read more than normal. Owners of the Amazon Kindle Reader are estimated to buy 3.3 times more books with their Kindle than they did prior to having their reader.
