Over the last two years or so, the popularity of e-books has grown enormously. A great deal of the credit for that should go to the Amazon Kindle reader which, whilst it may not have been the first reader to be released, has been a real driving force in the growth and development of the market for both e-book readers and the associated e-books.

The Amazon Kindle is perhaps one of the biggest technological marvels and one of the best things to happen to the written word in decades. And, since the Kindle can hold thousands of Kindle books on it, the need for an extensive physical library of pricey paper books is a thing of the past for many of us. On top of that, the need for a local bookstore is rapidly evaporating, since all anyone has to do with a Kindle is hook it up to Amazon’s online Kindle book store and purchase and download books on demand via the internet.

Now that the dust from the Xmas sales season has died down a little, it seems clear that it has been another phenomenally successful year for the Amazon Kindle reader. The new third generation Kindle, which launched at the end of August 2010 has pretty much picked up where the Kindle 2.0 left off and held it’s position as Amazon’s top selling product.
During the 2010 Christmas sales period (Nov 14 to Dec 19) it was the top selling item on Amazon’s site. Aplle’s iPod Touch (the 8GB version) took second place.

It seems highly probable that, when the sales returns are tallied up at the end of the 2010 festive season, it will prove to have been another record breaking year for Amazon’s flagship e-book reader. In spite of the premature rumors of the Kindle’s imminent demise as a result of the launch of Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s category leading ebook reader just seems to go from strength to strength.

Sales during the festive season are vitally important for any retailer. More than 30 to 40% of annual sales can be made in the few weeks leading up to Christmas. For Amazon, the 2009 Christmas period was an extremely important period, for a variety of reasons over and above the normal sales surge.
The Kindle 2.0 e-book reader, which hit the market in February 2009, and which had already shown itself to be a very successful product for Amazon, became the online retail giant’s number one selling item, and their most gifted and most wished for product ever. It has remained the number one selling item on Amazon’s website since that time.
