The Amazon Kindle reader has been a huge success for Amazon since it was first launched in November of 2007. The updated Kindle 2.0, which launched in February 2009 was a driving force in the early development and growth of the e-book reader market and the latest third generation Kindle reader, launched at the tail end of July 2010, has been flying off the shelves.
According to Amazon, the new Kindle 3 has been selling faster than any previous Kindle did during the equivalent post launch period. It’s a long way removed from the widely forecast demise of the Kindle that a lot of industry analysts anticipated in the wake of the Apple iPad’s launch.

The Association of American Publishers recently announced that e-book sales for the first six months of 2010 were 183% up on the equivalent period in 2009. Forrester Research estimated that 11 million Americans would own a digital reading device by the end of September 2010.
It looks like e-book readers are actively encouraging people to read more than normal. Owners of the Amazon Kindle Reader are estimated to buy 3.3 times more books with their Kindle than they did prior to having their reader.

Amazon recently announced that, in the four weeks following the release of their third generation Kindle, more Kindle readers were sold than during the same time period following any previous Kindle reader launch. The new, improved Kindle is not just in high demand - it is the fastest selling Kindle reader ever. As usual, Amazon did not reveal the exact number of Kindles which were sold, but they did advise that, since the release of the new version of the Kindle, customers have bought more Kindles on Amazon.com and the newly opened Kindle store at Amazon.co.uk combined than any other product.

There surely can’t be much doubt that the main player in the e-book reader market is the Amazon Kindle. The release of the upgraded third generation Kindle reader has made Amazon’s dominant position even stronger. It’s noteworthy that the only credible competition which the Kindle has seen to date has come from a multi-functional tablet computer which is more than three times the price of the Kindle – Apple’s iPad.
However, even the iPad’s entry to the market doesn’t seem to have caused any reduction in demand for the Kindle. Since it was unveiled at the end of July, the new and enhanced Kindle 3 has been selling like hot cakes. The new Kindle is selling faster than any earlier Kindle reader did in the equivalent post launch period.

The popularity of e-book readers has been increasing for some time now. It’s most likely not unreasonable to suggest that the Amazon Kindle reader has been a key factor in the growth of the e-book reader market. When it was originally launched in November of 2007, the Kindle, whilst not first to market, was a significant improvement on the other readers available at that time.
Amazon built upon its early success and reaffirmed its dominant role in the market when it launched the Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009. The large format Kindle DX followed in the summer of the same year and August 2010 saw Amazon release the third generation Kindle reader.
