You’ve had your computer for years and it’s starting to show. Nowadays, startups take forever and you’re lucky to turn on your computer without having System32 and L sass.exe errors or stop error codes pop on you in the middle of work. Already, you’re browsing for a new PC and looking for a replacement. Now, this might seem like a good idea, but decent computers are pricey. And in any case, a new PC won’t run like brand new for a long time.
It’s not that computers grow old and tired, although overuse and natural wear can slow a computer down. Usually it’s because they get used and abused by their owners! There are people who seem to install every known program under the sun which they never even use. Applications use up masses amount of hard drive space and can slow your computer to a crawl. However, you shouldn’t just go in there and start deleting things without thought.
Removing programs badly usually means lots of orphaned files, registry keys and device drivers which is a recipe for disaster. Think this is harmless? Well you won’t if you see an Unmountable Boot Volume Blue Screen crash! Resintalling Windows is a possible solution for slow computers, but it’s a bit of bother. A fast computer you will get, but you’ll have to add any updates and programs back on that were removed during the reinstall.
A better solution to keep your PC healthy and fast is through regular cleaning and tidying up. Maintenance can take a little work but it will not take long when you grow accustomed to doing it. And compared to getting screen freezes and blue screen error codes it’s nothing to gripe about. Here are some of the basics to get you started:
The first tip might be obvious but stop adding programs to your PC that aren’t going to be used. With so many free applications on the Net, you might get addicted to adding new ones to your computer, but don’t. Count how many programs you actually use in your Programs folder. I’m pretty sure you don’t even know what half of them even do.
Make a list of unused programs and delete them one after the other. Do this properly by using the Remove Programs utility in Control Panel. IT’s a good idea to delete any files that you don’t plan to use in the future. Mp3s, videos and photos can use up masses of space and can easily be transferred to an external hard drive. Making more memory available will make your computer run faster.
Cleanup temporary files and defrag your computer on a regular basis to free up more space and make programs run faster. Ensure that there aren’t lots of unneeded running applications when you boot your computer. The bottom right icon box may contain several applications that you can turn off on startup. Of course, antivirus and auto-update functions should be left on. For users who are a little more confident in making changes you can uncheck any startup applications using the msconfig command. You will notice that your PC doesn’t lag as much during boot-up and shutdown on doing this.
Last but not least, run antivirus software on a regular if not on a daily basis. Without protection, your computer is susceptible to attack online. Infections not only affect your PC’s performance but can corrupt data and even steal information from your drive. Once you get into the habit of maintaining your computer you will wonder why you didn’t start doing it sooner.
